about

For the title track on her album, Rise & Fall, Mulcair delves into family grief with a simple mantra: “remain open”. Singing about the ups and downs of daily life, and the sometimes overpowering want to shut out the world, she promises that allowing oneself to accept help from others will always ease the tension and pain, no matter the burden. As her gentle vocals transform into a powerful soul crescendo, the blues-tinged accompaniment pushes the song from quiet reverie to a compelling ballad.

lyrics

As you open your eyes
You realize that
As your chest rises and falls
Your heart still beats

What an obvious thing
You begin to think as I sing
Oh no, my friend
It’s beautiful

Rise and fall
But don’t forget the comfort of company
Rise and fall
I will hold your hand in mine

You may think you could die
From this sorrow inside
Sometimes the deepest scars
Will define us

You’re allowed to break down
But get your oil changed and belts replaced
Whatever you do, align it

Rise and fall
But don’t forget the comfort of company
Rise and fall
I will hold your hand in mine

Sit in silence let it ring,
You have done everything
All of your time, every checkbox
You ticked it

If silver lining were a thing
I would build you a hundred clouds with shiny string
With glue or tape or staples
Somehow I’d bind it

Rise and fall
But don’t forget the comfort of company
Rise and fall
I will hold your hand in mine

I will hold your hand in mine
I will hold your hand in mine
I will hold your hand in mine
